How to Lay the Foundation for Long-Term AI Success

Across the federal government, agencies are exploring how they can use artificial intelligence (AI) to solve long-standing problems and to discover innovative ways to manage operations and deliver services. By necessity, most agencies have focused on tactical objectives, limiting their risk while they learn about the technology and build out their use cases. Their challenge now is to lay the foundation for more strategic initiatives, said Winston Chang, Chief Technology Officer for Global Public Sector at Snowflake.

“We are going to have to be opportunistic to move the ball forward and to learn properly,” he said, “but we need to do it in the context of understanding the larger strategic moves that need to happen or that need to be understood.”

In this video interview, Chang discusses three keys to becoming an AI-enabled organization:

  • Addressing the underlying infrastructure for AI, including data, staff skill sets, and organizational processes
  • Putting in place the necessary leadership and providing them with enough resources
  • Adopting an AI factory model, which provides a structured, repeatable approach to develop high-quality enterprise solutions
