Per this post from Neil Williams, head of corporate digital channels at the UK central government’s Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS), below is a “Template Twitter Strategy for Government Departments.” It’s a helpful document as it includes a very brief overview of Twitter, offers some objectives and associated metrics, explores the risks of use and provides an outline for identity management. Have you been developing something similar in your organization? If so, please share. If not, I hope you find it to be a helpful tool.
Oooh, you embedded it, you guru! I was just poking around to see whether anyone had pointed out this wonderful document and found your post. I’ll post myself and point to yours.
Hi Janet…go ahead and post stuff like this (and anything you feel is valuable to the community!) for all to see…then maybe go to the group and alert them to its presence. Thanks for the additional information!
Jeffrey – beat ya to it! Of course, Janet beat us both!!! 😉
This is a super-practical guide, thanks for sharing it!
This is so extraordinarily helpful – I’ve packaged this up and distributed to as many folks as I can get my hands on!
Hello Janet,
Thank you for the post and the UK government Twitter feeds. The UK Guidance template has a good list of UK government Twitter feeds in Appendix B.
I’d add one more that is a secondary feed:
Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO – similar to the US State Department) – British Abroad
http://twitter.com/britishabroad
It’s a good outreach for ex-pat Brits.
Interestingly, but not all that surprising to me, the MI5 has not yet adopted Twitter for its outreaches. MI5 is using a Web site (http://www.mi5.gov.uk/), RSS, and listserv.
The service might be cautious about extending themselves on Twitter — especially after MI6’s Sawers Facebook flap — and the “Big Brother” perception is a definite risk.
Pardon this bit of cross-pollination here, there’s a GovLoop discussion at https://www.govloop.com/forum/topics/formal-policies-for-twitter where some people have posted their organisation’s policies.
I too am new to govloop and finding my way around, and I too mentioned this yesterday, in the twitterati group – so echo Janets comments above about the advantages of posting in groups or blogs. However – whatever the “right way may be, it looks as though a lot more people have found out about this now, which can only be a good thing.
This is USEFUL! Thank you very much for providing this.
