I am looking forward to attending the FOSE Conference April 3-5 in Washington DC. This is the second post in a blog series highlighting the 2012 conference tracks. Over the next week, I’ll highlight one of the tracks and provide some insights to what you can expect to see at FOSE 2012. The five tracks for the event are Cybsecurity, Cloud and Virtualization, Mobile, Defense Innovations and Records and Information Management. The second track to be highlighted is Cloud and Virtualization.

As government agencies continue to hampered to perform mission critical initiatives due to budgetary constrains, cloud computing and virtualization has become one option to soften budgets and help government to optimize and streamline services. Across all levels of government, it is undeniable that cloud computing is rapidly changing government IT. The cloud is being used to support a variety of different IT initiatives, everything from data center consolidation, and institute the “cloud first mentality.”

FOSE explains more about what you can expect at the Cloud and Virtualization Track:

The Cloud & Virtualization Conference at FOSE 2012 will look at the latest issues facing the federal government, the best practices presented by agencies at the forefront of the cloud model, and what you need to know about the new Cloud Roadmap issued by the National Institute of Standards & Technology. This conference will give you insights into government private cloud successes, commercial leading practices in use of Software-as-a-Service and Platform-as-a-Service, and Governance, Risk and Compliance issues affecting the federal IT community in implementing Federal cloud guidance.

This track should provide valuable knowledge to government IT professionals, and the cloud will continue to be a critical piece of technology for the government.

Here are some of the sessions for the Cloud and Virtualization track:

There’s been a lot of hype and unlimited coverage about the federal government’s mandate to consolidate datacenters in order to save money, reduce the carbon footprint and make IT more flexible and efficient. So how does the government customer actually find the money and pay for these projects? What are the best ways they can contract with industry or fee-for-service government datacenters? This presentation will explore tangible and tactical ways in which the Federal CIO’s mandate to consolidate datacenters can be implemented on time and on budget.

Learn from leading practitioners in industry and government who have successfully started down the path of datacenter consolidation and cloud migrations: how they did it, what worked and didn’t work in procurement, funding and implementation of consolidations and migrations. This will include lessons learned and recommendations around cost/benefit analysis, budget allocation, pricing models, and creative contracting ideas.

Learning Objectives:

  • Examine the costs and benefits of datacenter consolidation and cloud migration.
  • Learn commercial best practices for application migration and cloud deployment.
  • Hear creative ideas on how to fund cloud-based implementations.
  • See a recommended technical implementation plan and process.
  • Gain insight on overcoming major pitfalls
