NASA and Google joined forces to sponsor the Green Flight Challenge, which sought to increase the fuel efficiency of aircraft. Entries had to meet safety and noise requirements, energy efficiency standards, and demonstrate “reasonable speed and range.”
The winning entry, from Team Pipistrel, was an all-electric aircraft that flew 375 miles on 1 gallon of fuel. That efficiency mark was twice the competition’s standard. For their efforts, Team Pipistrel received the largest-ever prize in aviation, $1.3 million.
