#7 Glide to the Front
Man was created as a being who should constantly keep improving, a being who on reaching one goal sets a higher one – Ralph Ransom
If you want to get promoted, you have to get noticed. (Tip #7)
One proven way is to ask, ask, ask.
Continually ask for more responsibility. Volunteer for every assignment. Make it a point to go to your boss every week and ask him or her if there is something more you can do. They will be shocked and amazed. Why? Because nobody does this and it will put you ahead of the crowd. This one simple strategy will get you promoted every time. It has worked for me. It can work for you too.
Most people who come to work do exactly what is asked of them. That’s good, but it’s not great. Strive for greatness. Great people stand out, average people don’t.
Don’t worry about the naysayers. Keep asking for more tasks and responsibilities. You never know where it will take you. You may end up working with the manager of another department and when they have a vacancy, they will think of you first.
In his book, The Go-Giver, Bob Burg tells the story of a young man that learns that when you put others’ interests first and add value to their lives, more opportunities will open up for you.
Most people fail to understand that when you volunteer for more responsibilities, you are constantly improving your skill set. You are expanding your knowledge base. You are building a good reputation. You will benefit from this now and in the future.
Hint: If you want to be promoted faster than your peers, develop a reputation for offering to do more work than anyone else.
Action step: Go to your boss and volunteer for some extra work today.
