A look at the Apple A6 Chipset, BB10 and more

Here’s yesterday’s top tech news and updates

• iFixit did their teardown of the A6 chipset and Surprise! (it’s made by Samsung) – the Apple A6 was found to have dual custom 1GHz cores running ARMv7 instructions. As well they found 1GB of DDR2 RAM (the same RAM is found in the Droid RAZR MAXX). iFixit notes that while these chips are manufactured by Samsung, they are not necessarily designed by the Korean firm. • TouchWiz, Samsung’s customized Android Skin has major security flaw – a bit of HTML code was found that can instantly access the TouchWiz dialer, and factory data reset the phone. This works on the Galaxy S2, as well at least the AT&T version of the Galaxy S3. Maybe this will teach OEMs to get their janky skins off of phones. Via Droid-Life, more here.
• BlackBerry has added a ton of new features to BB10, but are they enough to matter? Gizmodo has an in-depth look at BB10 from the event yesterday. However, they seem to come away with a bad taste in their mouths. Via Gizmodo, more here.
• A New App, Klash, has popped up that is going to lead to bad things – this app allows your friends to “klash” you (or dare) to do (stupid) things. When people are getting injured planking, just stupidity will this lead to? Anyways, this is dumb, and will lead to more dumb things, stupid injuries and schools calling for “klash” bans. Oh well. • A malicious phpMyAdmin backdoor was found on the SourceForge site – and people are NOT happy. Developers were warned to check if the backdoor was present in their versions of the software. This malware was distributed on one of the official mirrors for SourceForge, causing much consternation. Via Ars Technica, more here.
• GigaOM has taken a look at Apple’s Passbook, and found it wanting – Erica Ogg has taken a hard look at Passbook, and while she likes it, she wants more. She feels a little let down, and thinks Apple needs more polish. Passbook was one of the key apps of iOS6, and while it’s not the Maps debacle, it looks like they need some work. • Apparently Apple is still using Google Maps “Where it Matters Most” – apparently one user of Reddit found that iCloud is using Google Maps for “Find My Phone.” At least you’ll have Google Maps when you need them, instead of the mess that is Apple Maps right now. Via Gizmodo, more here.
