Click to view slideshow.AFGE’s Hispanic Coalition (HISCO) held its fourth annual conference earlier this month in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This year’s conference was themed “Honoring Our Past, Building Our Future” and featured a tribute to the original group of pioneers who established the AFGE Latino advocacy group.
Conference attendees participated in a “political fiesta” to address the dramatic need to educate New Mexico’s Latino community about what’s at stake this election season. The “fiesta” featured both Democratic and Republican political candidates in New Mexico as well as representatives from the New Mexico Alliance for Retired Americans, the Committee to Preserve Social Security, the Central Labor Council, the New Mexico Federation of Labor, America Votes and Working America.
Southwest Voter Registration Education Project VP, Lydia Camarillo and AFGE National President J. David Cox were the featured keynote speakers. Both addressed the importance of the Latino community in the upcoming election as well as in local union organizing efforts. Both speakers urged the HISCO participants to continue to build community alliances and work toward improving support for unions in the communities they work in by volunteering and getting involved.
The HISCO membership voted to have the 2013 HISCO conference in San Antonio, TX and return to New Mexico in 2014. The dates for 2013 are October 2- 6, 2013. More information will follow.
