Chiltern Railways (UK) launched a mobile ticketing application that allows customers to buy, download, and validate tickets on their mobile phones. The free application delivers a 2D barcode, which can be scanned at the faregate and by ticket inspectors. “This innovation in ticketing is a first within the rail industry,” said marketing director Thomas Ableman “Rigorous usability testing means that we are confident our app is simple and easy to use for all passengers and we are delighted to have developed this industry first by making ticketing faster at a time when we’re also doing the same to our trains.” T3 reports that the app is compatible with iOS devices, BlackBerry, Nokia, Sony Ericsson, and Samsung Java-based handsets with color screens. An Android version is in development. Link to full story in Internet Retailing.
