As a trained library information professional and from what I see where I work in the Department of Veteran Affairs, I see a definite need for taxonomy development and content management. In many large organizations, the left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing. This is not intentional; it’s the result of not having an organized system for managing and sharing information.
More and more we’re employing various electronic methods of communication and information storage, but like days in the past, classification and subject headings were needed to promote access and reduce duplication of efforts.
Continually, I advocate for a more organized, consistent approach to content management, but it seems that we still continue to work within silos throughout our agency.
I’d like to hear from others throughout the federal government who are working with–and struggling with–this concept.
I wish to get more involved in this issue but am not sure which way to go or which approach to take.
Specifically, I’d like to connect with those working on such projects and get a sense of whether or not I’m a “lone wolf” out there on this issue.
