Since it’s the beginning of the year, I’m cleaning out my office again. Yes, I seem to do this every year, but it is always fun to rediscover older technology that I’ve used in previous years. Today’s rediscovery was my Microsoft Zune.
This was, to be honest, my first iPod because I refused to try an Apple product for a long time. Remember, I like to chart my own course. I’ll get there eventually, but if I started with what was easy, I’d miss some of the quirky technology moments like the Zune.
I recharged my ancient Zune to see what was on it because I wasn’t entirely sure whether it just stored my music or other key data that should be eliminated prior to considering its value for a garage sale.
And the first song it played completely resonated with me and a few phone calls I took from folks about their local social media implementation over the past week.
It played Josh Groban’s song “Don’t Give Up” which has the following lyrics:
Don’t give up
It’s just the weight of the world
When your heart’s heavy
I…I will lift it for you
Don’t give up
Because you want to be heard
If silence keeps you
I…I will break it for you
Everybody wants to be understood
Well I can hear you
Everybody wants to be loved
Don’t give up
Because you are loved
One of the incredible benefits of social media is that it does reconnect people across segments of our lives and introduces us to new colleagues, friends and those that we share common interests with. Social media, for me, has opened doors that I could never have forecasted 5 years ago, but it is amazing to see how these communication technologies offer each of us the opportunity to connect with other humans.
How we choose to connect with others shows how we care, who we love, and what is important to us. Don’t give up. We all want to be heard and, if you listen and share openly, you will not only be heard, but you will find those who love you and your way of interacting with the world.
