Fargo Flood and NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Tournament – Elite Eight Post from the Hokie Guru, GovLoop’s Bureacrat on Sports

Fargo Flood

That’s what it looks along the banks of the Red River; the Hokie Guru is glad that his sister, brother-in-law, and their children evacuated the city of Fargo. As you might know, the Red River (which is along the Minnesota and North Dakota border), was orginally expected to crest to on Saturday, but those estimates were revised. The river should hit 42 feet, but could be as high as 43 on Sunday. United States Department of Homeland Secretary (DHS), Janet Napolitano, has already promised help to Fargo, ND/Moorhead, MN residents. Several DHS agencies are already on the ground in North Dakota, including the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Customs and Border Protection, and the United States Coast Guard. The Department of Defense, the National Guard, and the United States Arny Corps of Engineers are also helping with flood protection efforts. This is how Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the House, feels about the situation in Fargo, ND:

And she’s right… these volunteers are amazing.

President Obama delcared the entire state of North Dakota a disaster area, which should expediate disaster assistance to the state. The residents, though, are in good spirits. “Any time you see Bison football T-shirts and Sioux hockey T-shirts working side-by-side and smiling, we’ve really come together,” Grubb said, referring to students from North Dakota State and its rival, the University of North Dakota. Which gives us a good transition into sports…

NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Tournament – Elite Eight

Welcome to the NCAA Big East Tournament!!

Seriously, the Hokie Guru raved about the Big East Conference for several weeks on GovLoop. For example, the Hokie Guru was on point during the pre-season. In January 2009, the Hokie Guru told you about the Big East and it’s nine ranked teams in the Associated Press top 25. The Hokie Guru praised the University of South Florida for its upset of the Marquette Golden Eagles.

And what now? Four Big East teams in the Elite Eight, including, Pittsburgh, Villanova, Louisville, and Connecticut… this is a record… let’s think about this for a minute… we could have three Big East teams in the Final Four (and if the ‘Cuse would have upset Oklahoma, there would have been an outside chance at four)… that’s incredible… hasn’t happened since 1985 when stars like Patrick Ewing, Chris Mullin, and Ed Pinckney were at Georgetown, St. John’s, and Villanova respectively.

If you did not read the Hokie Guru’s blog on govloop this year, your bracket suffered some major damage because he told you about the Big East 🙂

Side Note: Very impressive wins by North Carolina, Oklahoma, Michigan State, and Missouri (who’s victory probably messed up a lot of brackets), as well.

Most people are still hanging around in Govloop’s Bracket Challenge… you can see the results here. Password = govloop

The Hokie Guru is tired, Govloopers… he’ll do another post tomorrow morning on the Men’s NCAA Ice Hockey Tournament. Here’s the bracket… picks to come tomorrow for the Frozen Four in Washington, DC… and some more commentary on the Fargo Flood.

Good night!!
