Earlier this month, DOE and the Economic Development Administration’s Office of Innovation and Entrepreneurship announced the $12 million i6 Green Challenge with the goals of encouraging entrepreneurship to support the green economy, strengthening US competitiveness and creating new jobs. This funding initiative, which is also supported by USDA, EPA, NSF, NIST and the Patent and Trademark Office, is designed to provide incentives to the private sector to bring innovative green technologies to market.
The awards will support awards for six teams with the most innovative ideas to commercialize their technologies via Proof of Concept Centers. These Centers provide support for innovators through all stages of the entrepreneurship process, from assisting with technology feasibility and business plan development, to providing access to early-stage capital and mentors to offer critical guidance to innovators. Centers allow emerging technologies to mature and demonstrate their market potential, making them more attractive to investors and helping entrepreneurs turn their idea or technology into a viable business.
Details about i6 Green are available at www.eda.gov/i6 and the application deadline is May 26, 2011.
