(September 13, 2010) – Indian school children will be better protected following the Homeland Security and Disaster Management Academy’s (HS+DMA) inaugural “Disaster Preparedness for Schools” instructional programme held in New Delhi September 6-10.
Headlining the event was the “Safe Schools” initiative, which included both a two-hour overview seminar in which local administrators and educators learned the importance of safety planning and how to identify potential risks, and a four-hour workshop that provided real-life examples, hands-on exercises, and clear direction to help participants begin developing and implementing school safety plans. Videos, lectures, discussions, and “hazard hunts” allowed decision makers to gain knowledge to apply in the field for protecting students from both natural and man-made catastrophes.
Other activities during the week included sessions targeted at specific audiences such as school administrators, principals, and teachers, along with designated emergency management team members who will be specifically tasked with preparing for and responding to disasters at their facilities. All courses were led by highly qualified and internationally recognised instructors with decades of experience in crisis mitigation and management.
HS+DMA’s mission is to develop and deliver multidisciplinary, innovative homeland security and emergency preparedness solutions that leverage applied research, education, training, and community outreach. Its American parent company, C² Technologies, Inc., is led by CEO Dolly Oberoi, whose commitment to the safety of children in her native India and elsewhere was a major contributor to the creation and development of the “Disaster Preparedness for Schools” curriculum.
“Every day, we send our children to school with the confidence that they will be safe – but disasters can strike any time and any place. It is our duty to ensure the safety of our children worldwide … We can make a difference – one child at a time,” Oberoi said.
