I just stumbled upon Volkswagen’s contest initiative called TheFunTheory.com, established around 2009. The “site is dedicated to the thought that something as simple as fun is the easiest way to change people’s behaviour for the better. Be it for yourself, for the environment, or for something entirely different, the only thing that matters is that it’s change for the better.” There are four videos available, including the winner, “Speed Camera Lottery.” The video I first found was called “Piano Stairs,” filmed in Odenplan, Stockholm. Its theme is “Can we get more people to choose the stairs by making it fun to do?”…

TheFunTheory.com is great, although the best way…break the escalator.
In fact, we don’t have this problem in DC because our escalators are already broken.
Great link, Ira – thx for sharing! How do you suppose we could get politicians to change their behaviour and truly serve society as a whole instead of serving & protecting special interests? How could we make ethical elected officialdom fun?? And not to overlook us public servants — how could we make effective, efficient public service fun???
I think the best way to change behavior is Educating public. Trends are changing but as long as there is unhealthy eating lifestyle and a fast food drive through window around the corner, it’s going to be tough. People perceive things shown to them on tv as true but they need to dig more to get to the right information. Thanks to internet, people have learned to change their behavior and take those stairs instead of elevator. Our experiences with health and disease make us do everything even climb stairs, if that’s what needs to be done.
I agree with all of you – I don’t mind using stairs as long as I’m going down – prefer to use an elevator myself :p
