It was local government day and seniors from the local high school were invited to visit City Hall. Those students who took the field trip to City Hall were given a tour of all the City offices and then they had lunch with several members of the City Council. After lunch, they were invited to meet privately with the Mayor.
While visiting with Mayor one of the students asked the Mayor how he wound up in local government. The Mayor smiled, took a deep breath, then said “Well when I was young, just about your age, I had a dream of going to medical school and becoming a great Doctor. I wanted to help people in need but unfortunately I did not pass the entrance exam.”
My father drove me to the University where I wanted to enroll in. I was directed to a large lecture hall where about 50 other wanna-be Doctors were already seated. When the Dean of the Medical College walked in he administered all of us a one question test.
He handed each of us a single piece of paper that had five letters printed on it: P N E S I. Our directions were to rearrange those five letters and spell the part of the human body that is really only useful when it is fully erect.
All those students who spelt the word SPINE were admitted to the medical college and as far as I know they all went on to become great Doctors. The rest of us who came up with a different part of the human body had to choose another career. Consequently I wound up studying urban planning and going into local government. I decided to run for Mayor last year and won.
