The Federal Communications Commission has launched a speed test application for mobile broadband networks as part of its efforts to help consumers choose wireless providers.
The app for Android smartphones works to evaluate the speed and latency of mobile broadband networks, store the information in cloud environments and provide users an overview of actual network performance, the FCC said Thursday.
James Miller and Walter Johnson from the FCC’s Office of Engineering and Technology writes that the speed test app is part of the Measuring Broadband America program.
Users can download the app and send data in mobile network speed to the FCC in order to formulate policies.
The FCC wants to assure users that their privacy from data collection will be protected.
The commission collaborated with the Federal Trade Commission, wireless service providers and researchers to develop the app.
