There are still plenty of locally elected folks, particularly those for whom elected office is not their ‘day job,’ who are ignoring new communications tools. So here’s a story that might help you change their minds.
I thought I knew the potential of those tools … and then last Sunday, four police officers in my city got murdered. I put my reflections here on my blog, and recommend you consider offering a synopsis of this experience to any reluctant council members: http://electing2blog.blogspot.com/2009/12/elected-officials-will-rely-on-new.html
Even as an elected official, I got the first word about the shootings from Twitter and learned most other information from all the various forms of the media. ‘During a disaster’ would be a lousy time to learn how those tools work.
