Every now and then it’s very healthy to stop what you are doing, take a deep breath, and think about how lucky you are. How much potential you have. How awesome people are.
Now is one of those times for me.
My Project Teams Are Awesome!
I work with two teams of highly skilled, creative, and generally all-around awesome people.
Over the past week, I’ve had several conversations with my team members about how great they are doing, how wonderful our teams are. We have done so much together. They have executed, executed, executed.
They have introduced technology innovations to our organization in the process. Things that will make the world a better place for everyone there well into the future.
Pure awesomeness.
As a project manager, it can be easy sometimes to take your teams for granted. If you ever catch yourself saying “I did” you’d probably better stop right there. ”We did” or “They did” is probably the more accurate term. And for individual examples it’s “She did” or “He did”.
I’ve sat in meetings where a project manager gets asked a question like “When will you deliver x?” and responds with something like “I will have that done by [date].”
Baloney. Your team is developing it. You (should be) are guiding and removing obstacles for them. Other than that, get the heck out of the way.
The real work on projects gets done by the team. Never forget that. The sense of appreciation and gratitude you feel for the people you work with will make you a better project manager.
You Are Awesome!
I am so fortunate that anyone cares about what thoughts come out of my crazy head, let alone thousands of people. The inspiration I get from all of you is what drives me forward with my blog, YouTube channel, and training.
The criticisms and new ideas you leave in the comments are wonderful, and the questions I receive via email are extremely enjoyable for me to answer. You may think I’m just trying to help you, but you’re helping me too.
You make me a better project manager in my day job, a better writer, and a better trainer.
