Samsung strikes back against the iPhone 5, Gmail can search inside attachments and more

Samsung was NOT happy with the previous ruling, and is looking for some court magic of their own

Here’s the top tech news and stories for 2 October 2012.

As expected, Samsung has filed a lawsuit alleging that the iPhone 5 has infringed on their patents. Samsung has many LTE patents, and alleges the iPhone 5 infringes upon eight of them. It will be interesting to see how this pans out, considering Samsung is in the hole for $1B to Apple. Via TechCrunch, more here.
The production firm AU Optronics has reportedly been tasked to build the iPad Mini screen – the rumored 7.85″ device is set to be unveiled in October and released sometime in November. This is more evidence to support the release of an iPad Mini. Gizmodo also has some “leaked” images of the iPad Mini (here). Via Apple Insider, more here.

Judge Koh ends ban on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 – The Galaxy Tab 10.1 was the first Android tablet to rival the iPad in any form, but it has been banned since June. This is a two year old device, and the ban does not honestly mean much (especially when the Tab 10.1 2 was already out on the market). Via All Things D, more here.
A NTT DoCoMo translation application can convert languages in real time – This application can translate menus from Japanese directly into English. It seems pretty cool (can even speak the words too)! Via Engadget, more here.
HTC has unveiled their One X+ Smartphone built to rival the Galaxy SIII and the iPhone 5 – HTC has upgraded their One X+ with a faster Tegra 3 processor in all of it’s incarnations, some LTE and a larger battery, but it still has Sense (which only detracts from the Android OS, in my opinion). However, this device had quite the following, which may persist in the newest incarnation. Via GigaOM, more here.
The latest Android numbers are showing ICS/JB on 25% of devices – While these numbers may seem quite impressive for Android (I remember a few months ago when only 1% of devices were either ICS or JB), when you realize that 60% percent of iOS devices are on iOS 6, after a week. Yes it is the most popular smartphone OS in the world, but the fragmentation needs to stop. Via PocketDroid.Net, more here.
Gmail can now search inside attachments – one of the best things about Gmail is its search ability, and searching attachments is even better. Right now, searches can only occur on documents Google has indexed, but I cannot wait until this capability is in full effect. Via The Verge, more here.
The iOS 6 hits keep coming – Apparently some updaters are having a hard time with their exchange push email. Rolling out a simultaneous update to 200M devices is not an easy task, and some issues are bound to happen. The key is whether or not the issues are wide spread or in pockets. On this one, we’ll see. Box, one of the best cloud storage options, is beefing up security and search for enterprises – Box is rolling out new capabilities this week and will showcase them next week at their Boxworks event. They are adding “two-step authentication, company-wide file search, and content-scanning to the mix.” This is a huge step in the right direction (and to help them compete with rival offerings such as Google Drive.
