David Shumaker, a clinical associate professor in the SLIS program at the Catholic University of America,will describe what an embedded librarian is and does. He will be joined by panelists Michael Moore and Rachel Kingcade, who will discuss their roles as embedded librarians.

Program: Establishing a Digital Consortium
The panelists Connie Rendfeld, Aaron Trehub, and Kathy Buker will discuss creating procedures and establishing goals for a digital consortium. They have all created digital collections, then joined with other libraries that have done the same. The session will cover the steps for creating the collections, and how to provide access through consortia, and the issues experienced along the way.

SPOTLIGHT SESSION: “Powers of Perception – Dealing with Change”
Special session featuring Hyrum W. Smith, who will demonstrate and teach key concepts related to perception and behavior change to provide a positive, powerful learning experience that produces lasting results for individuals and organizations. His speeches on the need for clear perception and the link between beliefs and behavior have been presented to thousands of audiences worldwide. In 1984, he helped create the widely used Franklin Day Planner and formed the Franklin Quest Company; in 2001, he helped found the Galileo Initiative. He is the author of several acclaimed books, including The 10 Natural Laws of Successful Time and Life Management, What Matters Most, The Advanced Day Planner User’s Guide, and The Modern Gladiator, and is co-author of Excellence Through Time Management.

MLD Open House
The Military Libraries Division invites all SLA attendees to an Open House to “ring a bell” in Olde Philly. Food and drinks will be served.

Tour: Tastykake Factory, Old Philadelphia Naval Yard
MLD has arranged a great tour of the Tastykake Factory. The new facility has been refitted into a BRAC (closed) Naval base that was part of the old shipyards. Please join us to see how Tastykake has “greened-up” this former military base into a tasty place. We have coordinated a 55-passenger bus for transportation to this fascinating factory. Please contact Sharon Lenius if you would like to attend this tour.
