The Staten Island Ferry (NY) will convert one boat from diesel fuel to liquefied natural gas with funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Ferry Boat Discretionary Program. “Converting the Staten Island Ferry to liquefied natural gas is a win-win-win: It will reduce our dependence on foreign oil, lower operating costs and help the environment,” said U.S. Senator Charles Schumer in a statement. “This pilot program is a big boost for Staten Island commuters, who will ride a more efficient, cleaner ferry service.” The $2.3 million conversion is expected to cut fuel costs in half and to reduce emissions.
