The Washington region tends to slow a little after Memorial Day. The traffic is a little lighter (most days) and Fridays somehow seem to end a little earlier.
If you’re a developing leader, I would suggest that you use this time to take a step back and consider a question I get all of the time: How do I become a government executive?
Say “yes” when others say “no.” I’m consistently amazed at what reality-show contestants will do to become famous. Those who successfully rise up the ranks in government embrace a similar attitude about “getting things done.” I’ve heard folks say they intentionally avoid responsibility for doing little things — preparing a PowerPoint or completing administrative forms — for fear of being button-holed into a junior position. While the concern may be legitimate, the strategy is off base.
