Did you recently take a new position that requires you to have a more supervisory role? This past week I had the good fortune of spending time with several government leaders in our Center for Government Leadership training programs who are facing that very challenge. These Q&A’s came from from than 70 federal supervisors from 10 different agencies.
Q: I was recently promoted to supervisor after exhibiting strong people skills as a team lead. While I enjoy leading a team, I’m a little uncomfortable with the formal authority of being labeled a “supervisor.” What should I do?
A: Well, you sound like a natural for a leadership position even if the change in titles is a little uncomfortable at the outset. I’m consistently disappointed that federal agencies do not invest more time — if not resources — in preparing new supervisors for their increased responsibilities and supporting their transition into the role.
