Stocks were during the last week of the year as investors took profits from the pre-Christmas gains, securing some cash going into the new year. Tuesday was the only positive day of the week, gapping up at the open and closing not far from the highs of the day, but these gains marked the end of the holiday rally. Wednesday and Thursday saw sharp losses during their final trading hours putting the S&P 500 in negative territory for the week.
All the TSP stocks funds were down near 1% for the week with the S-fund lagging with a loss of 1.05%. The F-fund had a slight loss of just 0.03%.
Here are the weekly, monthly, and annual TSP fund returns for the week ending December 31st:
The SPY (S&P 500 / C-fund) gapped up at Tuesdays open leaving an open gap below. As usual, gaps liked to be filled so the index did not get a chance to reach its overhead resistance. Instead the gap was filled and SPY continued down to end the week at its lows. The C-fund was down 0.8% for the week but ended up 1.46% for 2015.
The Dow Completion Index (S-fund) fell below steep rising support Thursday but more rising support could be of available below the current price near 1010. Its 50-day EMA was the resistance that reversed the recent upward action. This put the S-fund down 1.05% for the week, and leaving it down 3.91% for the month, and down 2.92% for 2015.
EFA (EAFE Index / I-fund) was down this week too as it pursued open gaps below. It didn’t quite completely fill the two gaps but did opened a new one above. Rising resistance held on Thursday which kept the lowest gap from being filled all the way. This put the I-fund down 0.95% for the week and ended the year down 0.51%.
AGG (Bonds / F-fund) fell below support intraday Tuesday and at Wednesdays open but as stocks stocks sold off Thursday investor retreated to bonds. This left an open gap below and after finding falling resistance the F-fund was just down 0.03% for the week. The F-fund had a gain of 0.91% for the 2015.
