TSP Talk Weekly Wrap Up

The bulls fought back the bear’s efforts to reverse recent market action this week producing volatile sideways movement. The turning point came Thursday after the ECB’s stimulus decision caused a sell off during the first half of the day followed by V-shaped bounce for the following trading hours. Thursday’s late rally carried into Friday and a close at the high of the week capped off stock’s modest gains for the week.

The week produced modest gains for the TSP stock funds and a slight loss for the F-fund.

Here are the weekly, monthly, and annual TSP fund returns for the week ending March 11th:

Support from the rising wedge as well as from the 200-day EMA kept the SPY (S&P 500 / C-fund) from trouble this week. On Friday the index partially filled the open gap from the beginning of the year. The C-fund gained 1.19% this week and is now only 0.54% from wiping out its losses for the year.

The Dow Completion Index (S-fund) fell below the support of its trading channel Thursday but declining support from recent tops helped to reverse the downward action. After Friday’s rally, the index was back within its trading channel with a modest gain of 0.66% for the week.

EFA (EAFE Index / I-fund) filled two open gaps this week, one being from early January. There are still three gaps to be filled, two above and one below. With Friday’s rally the I-fund was up 1.06% for the week and so far is leading the funds for March with 5.75% gain thus far.

AGG (Bonds / F-fund) has been moving sideways as stocks move up. This has put the index out of its 2016 trading channel and now seems to possibly be forming a bull flag or pennant formation. The F-fund had a slight loss of 0.09% this week but still leads the TSP funds for the year with a 1.73% gain.
