This is called a QR code. If you have a smartphone, like a Droid, iPhone, and some others, then you can use the built barcode scanner apps (or download a free one if you don’t have a built in one) to scan the QR image. The image contains information which your phone can identify. In this case it’s a calendar event.
I should also point out that you can get the same information by going to http://usgs.gov/socialmedia and clicking the same image in the top right corner of the page…or you can go directly here: http://www.usgs.gov/socialmedia/qr/fb/11_29_2010.asp.
USGS Social Media event on science?
Check the “description” field in what you scanned. Check it closely…it does offer a clue.
hmmmm…if you like science, you like this.
hopefully not an earthquake…
OK, I’ve seen these around, but am clueless as to what they are. Can you give an explanation for newbies??? 🙂

Thanks for breaking that down Scott! I’m out of the loop since I only have an iTouch, but hope to get in the loop early next year with a Droid or an iPhone.
How are the images created?
No problem. I used a QR code generator. Quick search will list a few of them that are free to use. If you have a new itouch with a camera then you can scan it.
Very cool. I’m going to have to look into this more and see if any of my designers have done anything like this before. Thanks for sharing!
