My previous post on micro-participation included a definition of civic engagement that I hadn’t referenced before.
According to Michael X. Delli Carpini, Dean of the Annenberg School of Communication at the University of Pennsylvania, civic engagement can be defined as:
Individual and collective actions designed to identify and address issues of public concern.
I have not been able to pinpoint where it first appeared, but according to last year’s PACE white paper, An Evolving Relationship: Executive Branch Approaches to Civic Engagement and Philanthropy (download PDF, 1.4MB), “[t]his definition, and various versions of it, has become a useful standard.”
