Why Belonging Matters (and How to Foster It)

Have you ever had the opportunity to walk into a workplace and you simply felt… at home? Like you could truly be yourself, contribute your best, and know you’re valued? If so, congratulations because that’s the magic of belonging, and it’s essential for a thriving team.

Why Belonging? It’s Personal (and Scientific!)

Growing up abroad, I often felt like both an insider and an outsider. My experiences taught me firsthand how deeply our need to belong is woven into us. It turns out, science agrees! Harvard research shows strong social connections are a major key to happiness and well-being.

So, What Exactly Is Belonging?

Simply put, belonging is feeling like you’re part of something bigger than yourself, where your unique contributions are welcomed and valued. It’s a simple human need that is as vital as having a roof over your head and a full belly. Think of a time when you’ve had a heart-to-heart conversation with someone, did you feel a certain connection? If you have, that’s belonging in action.

Creating a Culture of Belonging: Tips for Government Leaders

  • Start with Your Values: Your agency’s mission, leadership style, and customer service practices all contribute to your workplace culture. Use these as your building blocks.
  • Look for Common Ground: Instead of focusing on differences, seek out similarities. New to the team? Find a mentor and learn from their experience or explore working with a coach.
  • Say “Yes” to Connection: Join networking events, grab lunch with a colleague, or even schedule a virtual coffee chat. Small interactions can make a big difference.
  • Teamwork Makes the Dream Work: Make meetings inclusive, inviting everyone to participate. Take the time to listen to ALL voices and giving them the opportunity to be heard. Recognize and appreciate your colleagues’ contributions.
  • Leverage Employee Resource Groups (ERGs): These groups provide safe spaces for employees with shared identities to connect and support each other.
  • Show Appreciation: A simple “thank you” goes a long way. Send an e-card, leave a note, or publicly recognize a job well done.

Belonging Takes Practice

Remember, building a culture of belonging takes time and effort. Don’t aim for perfection — focus on progress. Something I learned a long time ago is that 80% good is better than 20% perfect. Be open, be curious, and be present. When we create workplaces where everyone feels like they belong, we can all thrive.
