Here are today’s top tech news stories.
- While Apple had a “disappointing Q2,” they have managed to now reach $620B in Market Cap – I did not understand the analysts’ concerns with Apple’s Q2. With no major releases or announcements, it was business as (better than) usual. But it appears their stock is surging as iPhone 5 and iPad Mini rumors swirl, and if you think ~$660 per share is high, just wait until next month. Via TechCrunch, more here.
- Hulu could be in for some BIG changes – according to a leaked confidential memo, Hulu could be buying out one of the partial owners in September. That would be their equity partner which funded the co-op from the start, which could change the way they deliver content. Via Gizmodo, more here.
- A K-12 technology expert opines at Betanews on how Microsoft Surface could change tech in schools. Here.
- Did a Robot Find Amelia Earhart‘s Plane? One of the greatest mysteries of the 20th century is what happened to Amelia Earhart. Apparently, last week a robot search team found a couple of pieces of landing gear near where her Lockheed Electra airplane went missing. Via Mashable, more here.

- New Samsung Galaxy Player leaks – rumors are swirling about Samsung’s newest iteration of their Galaxy Player. The specs for the device are a larger than life (5.8″) screen with less than impressive resolution or innards. While Samsung obviously needs to save money over their high-end smartphones, strong media players can support an ecosystem (see the iPod Touch). Via Rootzwiki, more here.
- While attention has been focused on Apple v Samsung, Google is in some hot-water of their own – According to the Judge in the Oracle v Google case, Google “failed to comply” in disclosure of paid journalists and bloggers. Via The Verge, more here.
- Lenovo’s IdeaPhone K860 unveiled – details on their latest phone (destined for Chinese soils only) are impressive, with a quad-core Exynos (Samsung) processor, 5″ touch screen and a large battery. While it will debut with ICS, no news is known about Jelly Bean updates. Via Rootzwiki, more here.
- Microsoft is Offering another Back to School Deal – If you buy a Windows PC over $699, Microsoft is offering a free XBO360 as well only a $15 dollar update to Windows 8 in time. While I believe you can find a pretty reasonable “school” laptop for well under $699, if you decide to dip your toes deeper, it is a pretty solid deal. Via TechCrunch, more here.
- iPhone Security Flaw Allows Spoofed Texting – much like the Android security flaws reported last week, it appears there is an iOS flaw which allows you to spoof text messages on the iPhone. It allows users to send messages that appear to come from a different sender, enabling phishing and spearphishing attempts. via WebProNews, more here.
- Facebook backs up its Servers with low-power storage devices – Facebook is using servers that use 1/3 of the power when up and running. Via Engadget, more here. (Also more from Gigaom, here).
- ZDNet has an article entitled ‘Mutually Assured Destruction: Google/Motorola vs. Apple” – This article starts out with, “Apple has been asking for it, and now they’re getting it.” More here.
