West Virginia University is upgrading its personal rapid transit system to improve reliability and performance. The first step is to upgrade the communications system from analog to digital; 10 cars have already received new digital computers and the rest of the fleet will be outfitted over the next year. “The next project that we have to address is the propulsion system,” said associate director of transportation Arlie Foreman in a statement. “A few of the major causes of downtime are the on-board computer system, the propulsion system and the train control system. So if we can get two of those three out of the way and hopefully that third one in the future, we should become more reliable, dependable and sustainable.”
