Department of the Interior Secretary Ken Salazar has requested that the National Park Service add more sites and proprities related to women and minorities to the National Register of Historic Places or to be named as historic landmarks. The Washington Post Reports:
“Less than 3 percent of all the national landmarks that we have — the highest designation you can receive as a historic landmark — are designated for women, Latinos, African Americans or other members of minority groups,” Salazar said in a meeting with reporters last week. “That tells you that the score is not even.”
Secretary Salazar concerns will be addressed at a White House meeting which will also discuss if the government is meeting the needs of Hispanic students, small business owners, military veterans and artists. The Post also mentioned the on-going attempts for construction of the National Museum of the American Latino. The National Museum of the American Latino planning commission is seeking to build around the US Capitol.
Are there any sites or properties you would like to see added to the National Register?
