Federal Mentoring Roundtable: Diversity, Leadership, Mentoring and You

Last week, I was excited to roll out GovLoop’s brand new, first-of-its-kind, government-wide mentoring program. In just one week, over 70 mentors have signed up! Thank you to everyone who’s signed up so far – and it’s not too late for more mentors to come on board. We’d love to have 150 mentors on the ready by the time we open it up to mentees in tandem with the Next Generation of Government Summit so sign up and spread the word!

I’ve also had the opportunity to interact with other folks in government who have been running agency-based mentor programs. In particular, I was excited to learn about the Federal Mentoring Roundtable and the fact that we have a group on GovLoop dedicated to Mentoring Program Coordinators. Well, the Federal Mentoring Roundtable meets a couple times each year to network and learn from authors and other mentoring coordinators. Here’s some information about the next event:

Mary-Frances Winters is president and founder of The Winters Group, a 26-year-old organization development and diversity-consulting firm, specializing in research, strategic planning, training, and public speaking with an emphasis in ethnic and multicultural issues.

Prior to founding The Winters Group in 1984, Winters was affirmative action officer and senior market analyst at Eastman Kodak Company, where she worked for 11 years. She is a graduate of the University of Rochester with undergraduate degrees in English and Psychology, and a master’s degree in business administration from the William E. Simon Executive Development Program. She received an honorary doctorate from Roberts Wesleyan College in 1997.

Winters was selected to serve as Rochester Institute of Technology’s College of Continuing Education’s 1994-95 Distinguished Minett Professor where she taught a leadership course titled, 21st Century Leader: Visionary, Inspired, and Spiritually Grounded at the graduate level.

Among her other awards and honors, the Rochester Minority Enterprise Development Committee named Winters “Minority Business Person of the Year” in 1988. She was featured in the 1989 edition of Marquis “Who’s Who in American Women.” In 1992 she was one of five women nationally to receive the Avon Products, Inc., and U.S. Small Business Administration’s Women of Enterprise Award. In 1994 she received the Urban League’s Outstanding Community Leader Award. Winters was named a diversity pioneer by Profiles in Diversity Journal in August 2007.

Winters has served as a mentor for the Emerging Leaders Program Sponsored by the Centers for Leadership and Public Affairs at Duke University and the University of Cape Town, South Africa and is on the boards of American Institute for Managing Diversity and Mosaica.

Winters has been a frequent contributor to the editorial page of the local newspaper and USA Today’s Forum column on workplace and diversity related issues. She has been published in the International Personnel Management Association Newsletter, Profiles in Diversity Journal, Diversity Inc Magazine, Executive Excellence Magazine, Society of Human Resource Management’s Mosaics Newsletter, The EMA Reporter and has written monographs on “Philanthropy Among People of Color” for the Council on Foundations in Washington, DC. She is the author of three books, Only Wet Babies Like Change: Workplace Wisdom for Baby Boomers, Inclusion Starts With “I” and CEO’s Who Get It: Diversity Leadership from the Heart and Soul.

  • There is no charge to participate.
  • The Federal Mentoring Roundtable is a periodic conference on mentoring. It is open to all Federal Government staff & contractors.

  • Please remember that NIH is a federal office site. All Visitors to NIH must check in at the Visitors’ Gateway Center. You will need to allow for extra time due to security procedures. It is strongly recommended that you use METRO. NIH is easily accessible by METRO Red line. You would use the METRO Red Line Medical Center stop. All Visitors to NIH must check in at the Visitors’ Gateway Center. Below, please find web links for Metro map & NIH Campus Map. The NIH Natcher Conference Center is located in building 45. It is located toward the bottom right side of the map. It is approx 3-4 blocks walk from Metro stop. The Metro stop is located at corner of Rockville Pike & South Drive.   • The NIH Natcher Conference Center is an easy walk of approx 2-3 blocks. If you prefer, please take one of the periodic NIH Shuttle buses. Please allow 15-20 mins if using the NIH Shuttle since it circles the NIH campus before stopping at NIH Natcher Conference Center Bldg 45. Visitor parking is very limited, but available for a fee.
