A lot of the focus on government jobs is often about getting into the system. How to get that first government job?
But a big issue I think is how do you get your next government job? Most of my friends are in government and while they like their job, they are interested in new opportunities and often to grow in grade and responsibility.
To do that they need to change jobs but many of them have a hard time figuring out where to go for their next government job. What agencies are good to work for? How to switch job series? Where are their real opportunities for growth versus divisions where there isn’t much action.
I’m curious how others think about getting your next government job. How do you and your co-workers find opportunities? How do you decide when a job opportunity is worth applying for? Worth taking?
It seems like it’s a lot of who you know – networking. Pretty much all my jobs have been through people I know saying, “you should throw your hat in the ring for this.”
