Shared services — the Obama Administration is pushing its Shared Service Strategy. Share first is aimed at helping agencies improve the return on their IT investments, close productivity gaps and increase communications and collaboration amongst key stakeholders.
It’s all part of OMB’s 25-Point Implementation Plan to Reform Federal IT.
Greg Bateman is the senior director for acquisition programs and strategy at Microsoft Federal.
He told Chris Dorobek on the DorobekINSIDER program we have been talking about shared services for a long time and now we are actually taking a step forward.
“The current budget constraints mean a renewed push for shared services. It might not be perfect but its good enough to get the job done,” said Bateman.
Bateman’s 3 things to watch for with Shared Services
- Multi-tenancy: how can you use a single set of technology to support separate organizations in a secure way?
- Identity: how do you allow agencies with different identities (e.g.john.doe@agencyA.gov and jane.doe@agencyB.gov) to use the same system?
- Service Level Management: how do you ensure that users of a shared system experience the same level of service and performance as the provider of the shared service?
